Want to increase your odds of finding and developing gifted personalities for your radio station? I believe you'll find this summary of the secret I revealed during my presentation at CRS to be very useful.
I've been coaching radio personalities and studying gifted artists for over 20 years. I've been privileged to work with extraordinary performers like Kidd Kraddick, Jeff of Jeff and Jer, Rush Limbaugh, and Dr. Laura. I've also worked with some of the most driven and untalented people imaginable. I've observed successful songwriters, authors, screenwriters, and creators of TV shows. I've learned a lot about where great artists get their inspiration and how they create.
I've discovered the most successful artists across the media spectrum -- those who've created hit songs, blockbuster movies, best selling books, top-rated TV shows, and the most listened to morning radio shows -- share three common characteristics I've come to call "The Artist's Secret".
1. Instinctive Reactions. Their ideas come from deep inside. What they create is inspired by their instinctive reactions to what they experience in their own lives -- spontaneous, raw, uncensored thoughts and feelings triggered by what they see, hear, taste, touch, or smell.
2. Audience of One. What they create is designed to appeal to and satisfy an audience of one -- themselves. It's all about what makes them laugh or cry, marvel and understand. It's about what rings their emotional bell.
3. "I Matter". They believe that their thoughts and feelings matter. They believe that what they create based on their own thoughts and feelings will cause others to laugh, cry, marvel, or understand and make a difference in their lives. This belief fuels the courage and passion to create and supplies the creative juice. It also supplies performance energy, enthusiasm, and excitement.
I've collected many examples over the years to illustrate how "The Artist's Secret" has influenced extraordinary artists and their works. Here are three of my favorites. As you read these stories, look for the Instinctive Reactions, the Audience of One, and "I Matter".
